ActiveRain Tutorials: South Carolina Wildfire

South Carolina Wildfire

I am sure by now that most of the country has seen about the wildfire here in Myrtle Beach, SC.  It started yesterday afternoon and now has consumed over 8,000 acres.  I wanted to take a minute to let everyone know, that my family is all safe, the fires have moved around us.  However there are several others that are Local ActiveRain Members from throughout the county that need your prayers and support.  It has destroyed several homes in Barefoot Landing which is about 10 minutes north of me.  As long as the winds stay calm, hopefully they will be able to get things under control.  If the wind were to shift south though, the fire would be heading right towards my house.

Here are two pictures from my development.

Oh my....I'm sorry! I have been in this situation many times as I live in Southern California. My cabin is in Lake Arrowhead and we have dodged that bullet several times lately...so I know how scary it is. My very best for you and your friends, I'm glad you are safe! I will keep the whole area in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Jeremy, I hate to hear this. My father is headed your way in a couple days and is planning on staying in Merrill's Inlet but I am wondering if he should go now. We vacation at Ocean Lakes several times a year. How close is the fire to that area?? Or exactly where is the fire at?? Please take care of yourself!!

Jeremy, this reminds me of the fires here in FL ten+ years ago. They actually had to close interstates. My step son had to do a back burn to keep from losing his property. We Floridians know how this feels. We are thankful that you are ok and are praying they will get his fire out quickly.

Just a quick note before I try and get some sleep.  The fire is about 7 miles north of us.  Currently the winds are co-operating.  But, if they change directions we could be forced to evacuate during the night.  So far 69 homes have been destroyed, and over 100 damaged.  It is just under 20,000 acres burned now.  Thanks everyone for your thoughts & prayers.  I am exhausted and am going to try and rest in case I have a long night ahead!

Jeremy- In case you have to evacuate (which I hope you do not have to) Make a quick take box- with birth certificates, passports, home insurance deed & docs, meds, and photographs. Anything else that is critical and important we use this technique for Hurricanes. A large tote is usually enough.

I will keep good thoughts going out your way- and hope that you and your family remain safe and sound.

Hi Jeremy (& Katie),

We just heard about the fires here in Austria, so I called Diane to see if you were ok.

Glad to hear you´re ok! :)

Lots of love,

I love Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, no better places to be. I know some Realtors down there. I need to check to make sure they are OK. I sure hope it stays away from your place.

I know from the weather here is supposed to be hot and dry over the weekend. That is NOT going to be good for fires.

Our wishes are with you. We have spare bedrooms here if you need a place to stay and we have high speed!

Jeremy--This happened to us two weeks ago! An idiot started fires in a ditch about 3 miles from my house on a very windy day. The wind was blowing in a different direction from our house but several friends were evacuated as 3000 acres burned. Scary as I had to drive right by the fire to pick up my kids from school, then were rerouted as they closed off the roads. My heart is with you as it is so very frightening when it is a few miles from your home...All that smoke and fire is just scary! Stay safe!

It is one thing to hear it on the news, but another entirely to have it happen in your area - thoughts & prayers to your family & community.  I've been through this myself, but fortunate not to need to be evacuated.

Lets hope the firefighters are safe while they work to keep the beast in check.
