ActiveRain Tutorials: Widget Wednesday~ Tips to enhance your Outside Blog ¡Part Deux!

Widget Wednesday~ Tips to enhance your Outside Blog ¡Part Deux!

Another Wednesday has come upon us which means it is time for the weekly installment of Widget Wednesday.  If you missed last week, we covered the Local Posts Widget.  We talked about how it categorized your posts and also helped to Search Widgetbuild your SEO.  This week we are going to discuss the Search Widget.

What is the Search Widget? The search widget is probably one of the more powerful widgets available for an outside blog and also one of the most easiest to grasp.  As many of you may recall, I wrote a few weeks back, how the ActiveRain Search Button could save you thousands.  Well, the search widget may not save you thousands, but it can easily help you make thousands!

So how does it work?  The search widget is a Google Powered search engine that allows viewers of your blog to search for the keyword terms they are interested in.  It will display the results to them as if they were doing a regular google search.  The big difference is that it will only show results from your domain!  How cool is that!?!  So, for example, if someone stumbles upon my blog, and they are interested in purchasing a home in a community called, The Farm at Carolina Forest, the search brings up only posts that have been published by my blog.

If you remember me mentioning how the Local Posts Widget adds layers to your Outside Blog by categorizing and giving each post a unique domain to help increase SEO.  Well as you add that widget and some others you can easily create some great searches for people.  My search above brought back 241 results!

Search Results

So what are you waiting for?  Go add this Widget today! if you have not set up your Outside Blog yet, go do it now!  If you are not sure how to set up an ActiveBlog, as usual, Brad has written a tutorial here.

Jeremy, very interesting insights. I am new, however, I am sure that I will eventually be using this feature in the future. Thanks--Mark Velasco

Jeremy, Thank you!! Like Dan I added it in about 30 seconds. Wish it were all this easy. Looking forward to your next tidbit.

Hi Jeremy - I tried to recreate your search for "The Farm at Carolina Forest" and got 219 results. One of those on the first page was "Race the Chick-Fil-A Cows", which sounds fun and reminded me of the sausage race that the Milwaukee Brewers have ... but I don't see the connection to The Farm. So my question is -- can we fine-tune the Google search widget so that it only searches post content and not sidebars?

Hi Jer...

I installed this widget right away because I think that it offers a nice capability. Thanks for the post.

Great idea... Looking for the code now and on my way to add it.. Think it will be good on other sites too.. Hmmm

Posted by Roland Woodworth, Q Realty - Power In Real Estate (Q Realty) about 10 years ago

Jeremy- Going to do that before I go to bed tonight! What a great idea. I did not ever add these because I thought it was a search of all of Google- the internet. Now that I know, well, what am I waiting for?

Hi Jeremy thanks for this great information.  Can you give me a tip on where I find the link on how to add widgets like this?  Thanks.

Posted by Joan Whitebook, Consumer Focused Real Estate Services (BHG The Masiello Group) about 10 years ago

Jeremy - it's another grat tip that should yield results. I added mine months ago when I first got the outside blog.

Great tip!  I am going to add the widget to my blog now.

Posted by Preston Sandlin (Home Inspection Carolina) about 10 years ago

Holy Guacamole Jeremy!  I'm going to let you do that one for me!!  Seriously--how did you have that many searches with that one neighborhood?  Have you written that many about that neighborhood or are they tripled and quadrupled on your outside blogs and each one entry gives you, say, 5 ticks on Google?

Thanks for the tip!

Brad was kind enough to help me add this to my outside blog, and I have even used it myself to find a particular post.

OK.. I got this installed.. Now i test it and I have all the PPC links for other sites here too

Posted by Roland Woodworth, Q Realty - Power In Real Estate (Q Realty) about 10 years ago

"The big difference is that it will only show results from your domain!" Not entirely true. For example, if you search for "Myrtle Beach condos" on your blog, the results contain Sponsored Links at the top of the page and in the right column. This widget could potentially send traffic away from your blog ... and directly to your competitor.

Posted by John Novak, Henderson, Las Vegas and Summerlin Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace) about 10 years ago

Thanks, Jeremy... I had the Google Search widget up, but, did not realize that it limited the search to my blog... this is fantastic!  ps- I followed you on Twitter!

Jeremy - ok, I  am finally going to get my outside blog going, thanks for this tip, I will be implementing it.

Posted by Mike Saunders (Lanier Partners) about 10 years ago

John- ok, not sure why yours only brings up 219.  Mine today brought up 238.  I believe it is due to Google constantly indexing and re-indexing.  Here is my latest search results.  As for your second comment about sponsored posts & also filtering the results.  I don't believe there is a way at this time to get into the coding and change it to be more unique.  Unfortunately the sponsored posts will come up, but they are also there when a consumer does a search on google.  Hopefully though, most understand that they are sponsored and don't click off to them.  If they don't the difference on the search they see in comparison to normal google is that all the material is straight from your blog.  Not you, competing with 240 other agents that wrote something or have some sort of info on the same subject.  Also, for your consumers that you want to give an address to begin their searches on communities, you can give that address in confidence that they will be searching your material.

No that's a widget I can wrap my blog around. Limiting the search to my blog huh? Thanks Jeremy that makes a good tip!

Wow, very cool.

If ever any tool added to the "stickiness" of a site, it sounds like this one would be it.

Jeremy, great tip. I will be putting this on my outside blog and our standalone blog!

Posted by Christianne O'Malley, Exceptional Service - Delivering Results in Reno! (RE/MAX Realty Affiliates) about 10 years ago

Jeremy - Is this widget available for us as well to use on our sites that we have aside from ActiveRain? I have already activated it on my outside blog but I'd love to put something like this on Thanks.

Posted by Christianne O'Malley, Exceptional Service - Delivering Results in Reno! (RE/MAX Realty Affiliates) about 10 years ago

I had put it on my first outside blog but missed it on the second. After reading this yesterday I looked.

I used to have a Google search on my ActiveRain blog but it stopped working right at some point so I removed it.  Cheryl Johnson shared directions long ago.

Posted by Maureen McCabe, Columbus Ohio Real Estate (HER Realtors) about 10 years ago

Hmmm sounds easy enough.  30 seconds ok.  Thanks so much!

Question:  If my blog isn't developed enough it won't bring much up yet about differene areas ....related to my blog, rigth?

Jeremy it would be fantastic if you guys could get the mybloglog tracking widget for the outside blogs. Any update on that?

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) about 10 years ago

OK Jeremy I am going to sign up next week for the outside blog.  I have been neglecting my active rain account to much lately.

Posted by John Walters, Licensed in Louisiana (Frank Rubi Real Estate) about 10 years ago

John- if you need any help with it, do not hesitate to call me.

Bill- I am not sure where that is in the plans.

Anna- As you write more comment, it will bring more search results to your Blog.

Christianne- I am not sure if there is a place you can grab this widget for your other sites.

Posted by Jeremy Blanton, Myrtle Beach REALTOR®- (Myrtle Beach Homes Blog) about 10 years ago

Jeremy - Where is it exactly that you are putting all these widgets.  Is this where you would put the code in your settings in order to see the widgets in the right margin of your blog?

I have this widget on my outside blog.  I'm wondering if it's possible to set it up on a wordpress page?  I'd love to have something more google-ish than generic for a search on my wordpress.  Let me know!  Thanks -- Angie
