I should probably start by saying I've never seen Jersey Shore, and had to honestly do a Google search the first time I heard her name to find out who she was. I quickly realized why I never watched the show after watching a 2:13 YouTube video of her "best quotes."
That being said, the other day I was flipping through websites and came across one that gives you the opportunity to purchase advertising. You can purchase the normal ad spots on a site for a month, or pay someone to send a Tweet for you. While there I wanted to see who the most expensive ad which as you probably have guessed by now, was Snooki. If I gave her $6,250 she would send out one tweet of anything I wanted.
While I thought of all the cruel and fun things I could do to friends by having someone with over 6 million followers tweet something, I then started thinking more about how this could be for business and if it would be valuable for a business to spend that kind of money.
So, I started to think about my business and would I pay $6,250 to have Snooki send one tweet for me? I tried to break it down into numbers to see if it would make sense. Here's what I came up with:
- If I pay per character sent and follow their rules of using only 110 characters to leave room for re-tweets, it would cost around $56/character.
- If I pay per user, that would mean I'm paying $1 per 990 users.
- If I pay based on Hubspot's 2.8 hour half life, I'm paying $37.21 per minute of life of the tweet.
So I really started pondering if this was the best use of marketing dollars a company could use. Would you open up your bank account and give Snooki $6,250 for tweet about your product or service?
For me, I'll probably stick to simply building my own community the old fashioned way and use that money towards many other things.

Yes since we are a local business we have to stay focused and have our advertisisng more directed.
LOL Carole! I'm doing great, thanks for asking!
No way would I spend $6,250 to have Snookie advertise for me. I wouldn't pay $6.25 to have Snookie advertise for me. She's not the person I would want representing my business.
Jim- My guess is that you would not be alone :)
Oh, this is absolutely hilarious.
Funny post - Based on that $56. per character, how much would I have spent on this post?
LOL Marjorie!
Glad you found it funny Susan!
Jeremy - Catchy post. I would say you might get $6,200 worth of brand awareness out of Snookie (on your post)...without even having to pay her.
Jeremy, First, I wouldn't want her associated with our brand. 2nd, how many of her followers would be in my area? And of those, how many would actually be in the market to buy/sell a home? And from there, how many of them would NOT have an agent and would be stupid receptive enough to take Snooki's advice on hiring an agent? And that's my engineering rationale for saying NO WAY.
OMG that is crazy. Not sure that I would ever want her representing my brand.
I would guess, thought that maybe for some national brands with big budgets, that have synergy w/ her style/their target, it might make a bit more sense...but then again, I'm guessing the #'s still would work.
I'm with Debbie - I'm not sure I would want someone like her representing me or my business (admittedly, I watched the TV show). Although I had no idea this was even a thing - Pretty funny stuff!<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:RelyOnVML/> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]-->
LOL Kevin! I just might!
Oh Bill- I wish there was a +1 button on your comment! :)
Debbie- Crazy is an understatement I think.
Jenn- You are a step ahead of me, I've never even watched the show.
Jeremy -- though I have never watched the show, I was unfortunately aware of who Snooki was, and like several others I would not want her representing my brand, even if her tweet for me was free!
Well Tony- They had Paris Hilton available too if you want... she was only in the 4K range too!
Pretty said statement on society that 6 million people of any age choose to follow such a person. Realty tv on the whole lends little to society. Whatever happened to good old clean relaxing tv?
I did watch the show but there is no way on this green earth I would have that chick representing anything I have to say. Now someone like Lady Gaga or Johnny Depp....that's a different story.
I'm gonna have to go Google it now. But ummm, no can't say that I would.
Jeremy: While I can see the merit in possibly having someone of Snooki's popularity "tweet" a business message for me ... I can NOT see it actually being Snooki. In theory I understand the benefit ... but ...
Gene
Can I get Obama for the same amount?
I would do this. .
"If I was selling the WhiteHouse. .I would call Fernando!"
She is probably laughing all the way to the bank
I think I'd find someone a bit more refined and a bit less well Snooki like.
I like Fernando's response (#21). I think I will tweet something like that!
Hi Jeremy,
I wouldn't have her tweet for me if it was free...how about that!
Hope you are well!
Betsy
Jeremy, it's not fair for Snooki - she lost almost 320,000 customers who could have dared to pay $6,250 - ok, there are about 25 comments that said 'no' so - make it 320,000 - 25! (or make it 320,000 - 26, even I don't have that kind of money!)
no
Jeremy, you said you'd "probably" stick to builiding your own community. Does this mean Snooki has a chance with you? Keep us updated!
Jeremy, Snooli, no way but Honey Boo Boo, that's a horse of a different color. Just kidding, she wouldn't make the cut either.
Jeremy, I don't see the point in paying a celebrity or even a reality show celebrity like Snooki tweet something on my behalf. I think marketing dollars are better spent in other places :) No, I have never seen that show before either.
Jeremy... while the world likes drama and is attracted to that sort of stuff, I think it would not promote the corporate culture and feeling that I want to coveny to my prospective clients. You... however, yes I might pay for you to promote me
I think I'll take a pass. I'm not sure one of her followers is the type of client I am trying to attract.
Jeremy: I may be talking heresy, here... but I don't know if this Snooki person came up to me and bit me... if I'd know who the heck she is. And, on top of that, I'd prolly have to get rabies shots because of it. That would not make me happy.
I have never seen Jersey Shore, either... prolly another heresy ?
"But If You Just Closed ONE DEAL From It!" - said the sales person on the phone.
That isn't the image I want to project so I wouldn't use her even if I could actually afford it.
for one tweet? no way. I can think of much better ways to use my marketing dollars. Sometimes it pays to be frugal. Thanks for your post today,
Praful: If that is your target market, it might not be a bad tweet. You figure a lot of celebs probably follow her. Could it get you an extra closing?
Going by the 3% rule, in order to cover the $6500, you would have to sell ONE property at about $315,000 with a 70/30 split. If you are already capped or receive 100% commission, you would only need to sell a $225,000 home.
I think many of Snookie's 6 million fans could afford that price point. Although I might go with Khloe Kardashian instead. She is local to Dallas. Her fee is $8250 per tweet to 4.8 million followers.
Talent isn't necessarily a predictor of financial success, apparently. Great post!
I really don't think she would be the best person to have tweeting for you. I'd use those dollars elsewhere that can drive potential buyers to you
Hardly worth the money!
Damn it man...we need a "like" button for Nino's comment in #35! Bob?
Tom
Here's the thing. Yes, you would get a TON of attention and a TON of people would see your tweet, but I'm guessing that most folks that follow this person are mouth breathers. No thanks.
Jeremy, I think I would have to pass and put my advertising dollars somewhere else. Snooki who!
Snooki sending out one tweet is hardly a real endorsement, since she'd send a tweet for anyone that paid her.
I loved your financial analysis - the $1 for 990 users is a lot better price than sending out marketing materials. Perhaps Snooki would consider doing a private tweet to 1000 of her closest followers for a mere buck. That would be worth it!
Jeremy, that's too much! You can gain online popularity at a lesser cost. Start by blogging everyday and the rest will follow.
I could see this working with someone with a higher education fan base like Anderson Cooper and Brian Williams. I don't think I would want Snookie followers as clients, but educated people following educated people would make for good clients.
Kerrie- they did have Paris Hilton available for around 4k. How about her?
Betsy- I'm with you, I would do it either if it was free I don't think...
Eric- that chance is slim to none to not a chance.
Kevin- Hmm... Honey might have a chance...
Katrina- I agree! Money could be spent way better!
Hmmm... Melissa Zavala- How much you gonna give me? :)
Don't feel bad Karen- you are not alone on not seeing the show.
Greg- if "if's and but's were candy and nuts...."
Peter- someone that is credible might be worth it, but is it still the best use of $$?
I agree Tom Branch... I would click it on a few comments here too!
Kat- that would be valuable, but there's no easy way to connect to 1,000 privately on Twitter, so if she had to manually send it to that many, she'd probably charge you around 328K.
Donna- yes someone more credible maybe... but, I still think there would be better uses of that money that would have greater longevity than a tweet that lasts a few hours.
Jeremy - Like many people above, I wouldn't pay any amount to have her advertise for me.
Nope...I'll just keep blogging and sending direct mail...I could send A LOT of direct mail for that kind of cash and get a better response I'm thinking lol :)!
Brenda- that would surely be a LOT of postcards!
Aw geez - what a title! That's the hardest part, the title! Great blog!
Thanks Jan!
Jeremy, you are a very wise man! The only person who will get rich from a Snooki Tweet is Snooki. Like Tammie White, this is not the image I want to project. I'm now going back to read Nino's comment!
Ditto Brenda - I'll add that posting on Craigslist and having signs up is the key * and they are FREE or already paid for
I would not let even close to my marketing for any reason. I prefer to stay Professional looking!
